Ford Cortina Mark IV (Mk4)

One of the biggest steps made by Ford during the creation of fourth-generation Cortina is the convergence between the German Taunus and the British Cortina. After the model was launched in 1976, these two become the same cars with different badges. Furthermore, with the appearance of Ford Cortina Mark 4, United Kingdom made a significant step giving UK Ford dealers the ability to sell Cortinas that were made overseas.

Mainly, the main feature that differed Mk 4 from its predecessor was car’s conventional design. For sure, it differed a little in terms of technology with its revised sitting position, retention of a running gear, dashboard, and suspension layout. Still, driving Mk4 was very familiar to any Cortina launched before, though a little bit more comfortable and with a prettier view out.

It is worth to mention that Taunus, a German Cortina, was introduced to the market in February 1976 while its British twin was introduced only in September. A year later, in the autumn of 1977, a new version was introduced by Ford. In 1977 you could choose from Cortina range considering 19 models, 3 body styles, 4 engines and 5 trim packs. During its production period, around 600,000 models of Ford Cortina Mark 4 were made.

‘Cortina 80’, the final Cortina incarnation introduced in September 1979, replaced Ford Cortina Mk4. Although it is hard to say that it was complete facelift or rebody, though there were a little of both, it was a car that showed significant improvement in comparison to its predecessor. The head was completely revised, as well as tail lamps. Wraparound indicators and an aerofoil grille draw a lot of attention one the outside. The top of all these was a new roof with larger windows making this car a must have.

Hi,Throughout the years I have owned 12 cortinas including a bright yellow “runner” I bought ( circa 1984/5) from a scrapyard near Woodbridge in Suffolk for £40! mainly for spares but it looked to good to scrap. It had 1 months tax and mot, I called into a garage for petrol and on exiting the garage I put my foot down and the smoke screen produced was exremely Impressive!I managed to get another mot on it and finally scrapped the beast some 12/13 months later and broke the car for spares and made myself lots of money in the process… happy days.
I now own a Spartan kit car which is a wee beastie herself, the handling is best described as scary but it certainly is fun and a real head turner and the beuaty is that you can actually “fiddle with that reliable old pinto engine till the cows come home to roost ! and over the 15 years I’ve had her shee’s certainly had plenty of fiddlin!! (Apologies to all those Cortina owners, I didn’t “muller” the Spartan/cortina myself but bought her on a whim. Just a few days ago I was wanting to buy a beautiful MK3 GXL 1972, unfortunately I missed out.)
The Spartan is based on either a mk4/5, 2.0 405 block engined cortina first registered 24/11/1980 and I’m having trouble locating a working petrol sender unit. Can anyone help me out? if so please e mail me on paul.durrant1956@gmail.com
I’m in Norwich Norfolk and would be willing to travel but would gladly pay postage costs.
    Thanks

Hi, I have just bought an unfinished kitcar project, a Pilgrim Tourer, based on a mk4 Cortina.
Engine is a 2.3 Cologne V6 to get it registered against the correct emissions standard I need to know the engines date of manufacture.
Does anyone know if there’s any way of ginding this on the internet, or if Ford would help?

I have a Mk4 cortina front chrome bumper in very good condition.
There is a slight kink in around where the mounting bolt holes are, but I am sure it can be knocked out. The chrome work is in perfect condition.

Hello. My friend has a Mk4 rolling shell It’s going to be scrapped, but that seems a shame. Would anybody want it ?
it’s been modified to take a 5 litre Ford V8 and it has a Volvo rear axle with it, but all the panels are good.
Be quick. It will go to the crusher soon!

A crime that these are now so scarce. They certainly should have saved as many Ghia versions as possible as they looked really nice.
